To him that overcometh…
Revelation 2:17

The Lord’s purpose is to make us “overcome,” for the promise is only “to him that overcometh.” But He means us to “overcome” in His strength alone, and not in our own. This we usually learn very slowly. We set the commandments before our eyes, and think that if we diligently keep them we shall at last obtain God’s favour and come safely to heaven.

But we continually fall short in our obedience to them. Because we do not know the strictness of God’s commandments, the spirituality of the law and the breadth of the commandment, we think that the imperfection must surely lie in ourselves: that we have not watched aright, have not paid enough attention to the ways of our heart, and have not done what we really might have done. We do not yet know that the rooted depravity of man is so great that he can never keep God’s law. We do not know that the Lord means in this way to teach us our weakness. So we rise up again like one that has fallen, and try once more to run the race.

But to our astonishment we see our efforts fail again and again, and see that we cannot be what we would be. We would be righteous; we would be holy; we would not sin; we would watch over our eyes, ears and heart; we would turn aside neither to the right hand nor to the left.

The Lord may let us go on for a time in these paths of fruitless labour, but after a while it comes to a crisis. Some temptation may come upon us so sweet and so well suited to us, that we are at once entangled in it, and all our strength is gone. Our resolutions for the future are broken in a single moment. And slowly we begin to see how exceedingly weak we are before any temptation whatever.

Reading: Revelation 2:1-11

To the reader…

Whoever seeks the Lord knows how often he has begun again, and perhaps that is true of you too. You resolved to watch more carefully over your eyes, your ears and your heart, to turn aside neither to the right nor to the left, and yet you fell again, sometimes at the very first temptation. You thought it depended on your diligence, and you exerted yourself still more, but it did not get better. Perhaps it has left you weary and disheartened.

Then do not grieve too much over that failure. Slowly, and often painfully, the Lord is teaching you in it what you would never believe of yourself: how exceedingly weak you are. That is no defeat in His eyes, but a lesson He wants to teach you. For He wants you to overcome, but not in your own strength. Whoever sees his own strength broken is just in that way made ready to expect everything from Him.
