Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for Thou art my praise.
Jeremiah 17:14

We labour by nature under the dreadful disease of deafness. We are deaf to all the admonitions of God’s Word, deaf to all His threatenings and chastisements, and deaf to all His sweet promises. Even all the sermons in the world cannot of themselves cure our deafness. But it is the work of the Lord to open the deaf ears. And when we begin to feel how deaf we are, and grieve that we cannot hear God’s truth with life and feeling, this raises up in our heart a cry to God that He would bless His precious Word with divine power and apply it to our soul.

Do you not sometimes come to the house of God with that dreadful disease of deafness? You may come every Lord’s day, and yet through this deafness what you hear is not attended with power. You do not hear to the full satisfaction of your soul: your heart and spirit do not melt and grow soft under the word. It seems as though, although you listened with your outward ear, another ear was wanting—the ear of your heart. And until it pleases the Lord to open that ear, all that you hear with your outward ear is fruitless.

When we now begin to cry to the Lord that He would apply His Word to our heart, bring His precious truth into our soul and let it drop as the rain upon our spirit—that is in fact crying to the Lord to heal this disease of deafness.

Reading: Mark 7:31-37

To the reader…

Sorrowing hearer, do you sometimes go home with a heavy heart because the word passed you by? You listened, but the heart did not melt; the truth sounded, but it stayed outside. Then you know something of that dreadful disease of deafness. Yet do not be afraid to own it, for a soul that grieves over its deafness is already no longer altogether deaf. That sense of want and that complaint are themselves a token that the Lord is at work.

Then let that complaint become a cry. Do not take it to yourself, but to Him Who alone opens the deaf ears: “Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed.” Ask Him to let His precious Word drop as the rain upon your spirit and to open the ear of your heart. It is His work, not yours, and He is the Physician for all who cry to Him in this way.
