The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know Thy Name will put their trust in Thee: for Thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee.
Psalm 9:9-10

“Them that seek Thee.” Among these are the poor, the lame, the halt: the little ones in God’s family, who cannot climb to great heights and have not sunk deep into soul trouble either. None of God’s family is shut out, for not a hoof of Israel shall be left behind. They, then, seek God. But before we can seek God, two things must be wrought in our soul by divine power. First, we must desire to find something, and then we must know something of that God in Whom we wish to find what we seek.

If I lose something, I go and look for it. It is child’s play to go searching everywhere if I have lost nothing and want to find nothing. Therefore, if there is not deep in our hearts a spiritual desire to find Jesus as the salvation of our soul, as our hope, our portion, our treasure, our all, then our seeking is a dream. Then the seeking is merely feigned; we are mocking God; we are trifling with our souls; we are only playing the part of a hypocrite.

But is there a crying in your soul after Him, a longing in your heart to find Him gracious, a sigh of your spirit into His ears and His heart? This is perhaps the smallest mark of a living soul, and God in His mercy has given that mark to encourage the hearts of His weary children. Then you are a child of God. If this seeking of your heart is really a spiritual sigh of your soul into His bosom, God will not forsake you.

He will not leave unfinished the work He is carrying on. He will not let sin, the world, Satan and self gain the dominion. He has never forsaken those who sincerely seek Him, and He never will forsake them.

Reading: Psalm 69:18-37

To the reader…

You who count yourself among the poor, the lame and the halt in God’s family, who cannot climb to great heights: this word is for you too. Not a hoof of Israel shall be left behind. Do you seek Jesus as the salvation of your soul, as your hope, your portion and your treasure, because you have lost something you cannot find again without Him? Then your seeking is no child’s play and no hypocrisy.

Perhaps you find that sigh in your heart so small that you dare not build anything upon it. But even the smallest mark of a living soul God has given in His mercy to encourage His weary children. Is there in you a crying after Him, a longing to find Him gracious? Then He will not leave unfinished the work He has begun. Those who sincerely seek Him He has never forsaken.
