Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
Isaiah 45:22

Again and again we are in circumstances in which no one can do us the least good, and in which we cannot help or deliver ourselves. We are caught in snares and cannot loose them; we are in trouble and cannot comfort ourselves; we are wandering sheep and cannot find our way back to the fold; we are continually running after idols and hewing out “broken cisterns,” and cannot return to “the fountain of living waters” (Jer. 2:13). How suitable and how glorious it is, then, for those who are so tried, to see that there is a gracious Immanuel sitting at the right hand of the Father. His heart is full of love and His bowels yearn with compassion. He has shed His own precious blood that they might live, He has brought in a glorious righteousness, and He it is Who “is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him” (Heb. 7:25).

Therefore the Lord tells His children who are at “the ends of the earth,” and afraid to draw near, that He is the Mediator between God and man. To those who are guilty He says, “I am your pardon”; to those who are naked, “I am your clothing”; to those who are defiled, “I am your cleansing.” Because they are at “the ends of the earth,” the purity of God would keep them there for ever. But because there is a Mediator, a glorious Intercessor, an almighty Advocate, an Immanuel, God and man in one glorious Person, they can, though they are at “the ends of the earth,” draw near through Him, for in Him they are blessed and accepted.

They really are at “the ends of the earth,” and through guilt and shame dare not draw near. But let Jesus give them one look, one touch, and their poor, needy, naked souls spring forward into His arms and find that access to the Father is near. For by that look they see that there is a Mediator between God and them, an Intercessor and Advocate Who sits for them upon a throne of grace.

Reading: Isaiah 55

To the reader…

Are you caught in snares that you cannot loose? Are you a wandering sheep that cannot find the way back to the fold, and have you hewn out for yourself broken cisterns that can hold no water? Then you know something of the ends of the earth. You cannot help or deliver yourself, and through guilt and shame you dare not draw near.

But look to Him Who sits at the right hand of the Father, Whose heart is full of love and Whose bowels yearn with compassion. To the guilty He says, “I am your pardon”; to the naked, “I am your clothing”; to the defiled, “I am your cleansing.” Wait for that one look, that one touch of His hand. Then your poor soul, however far away it lies, will spring forward into His arms and find that access to the Father is near, for He is able to save to the uttermost them that come unto God by Him.
