The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know Thy Name will put their trust in Thee: for Thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee.
Psalm 9:9-10

Has it been wrought with divine power in your conscience that you want to know Jesus and the power of His resurrection? That you long to feel His atoning blood sprinkled upon your conscience; that you pant to feel His infinite love shed abroad in your heart; that you want to know the fellowship of His sufferings, and to be led by the Holy Ghost into a solemn union with a suffering Lord? Do you want to know whether your name is in the book of life? Whether the Holy Ghost has really begun a work of grace in your conscience? Whether you are really on the narrow path that leads to eternal life?

Does this sometimes fill your soul with intense anxiety, so that it lies nearer your heart than any worldly care or any earthly thing? If so, then you are seeking in such a way that you may perhaps find something, and you know what you want. You want power, you want mercy, you want the blessing that maketh rich, you want the testimony of God and the sweet consolations of the Holy Ghost in your soul. If you do not want this, your whole profession is a lie. But if you do want it, the Holy Ghost has also taught you where to find it.

You have been brought off from the creature, stripped of your own righteousness and weakened in your own strength. Your evil heart has been laid bare, you have felt the burden of sin in a guilty conscience, and you have known real trouble and sometimes spiritual distress. You have seen the way of salvation through the Son of God. You believe that He is “the way, the truth, and the life,” and you believe that none but He, in His blessed manifestations, can do your helpless soul any good.

Reading: Psalm 90

To the reader…

Does it lie nearer your heart than any worldly care whether your name is written in the book of life? Do you know that intense anxiety whether the Holy Ghost has really begun a work of grace in you, and whether you are indeed on the narrow path? Do not let that seeking discourage you. Whoever seeks in this way knows what he wants: power, mercy, the blessing that maketh rich, the testimony of God in the soul. And such a seeker may well find something.

If you have felt the burden of sin in a guilty conscience, if you have been brought off from the creature and stripped of your own righteousness, that is no sign that the Lord has forgotten you. It is the very way by which He teaches you where it is to be found: in the Son of God, Who is the way, the truth and the life. He is a refuge for the oppressed, and He has not forsaken them that seek Him.
