Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God Which teacheth thee to profit, Which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.
Isaiah 48:17

How personally the Lord speaks: “thy Redeemer”—“thy God”—“Which teacheth thee to profit, Which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.” It is as though the Lord had singled out one person, a favoured one, and spoke to him from His blessed courts, and addressed these words to his soul, as if there were no one else on earth to whom He spoke them. And that is the beauty and blessedness of an appropriating faith: by that appropriating faith the soul so shares in the love, the blood and the grace of God, that it seems as if she were the only one on earth or in heaven who enjoyed this favour: “Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.”

Here the Lord speaks; must we not then listen? How does the Lord begin that glorious prophecy in Isaiah 1? “Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth.” And why? “For the LORD hath spoken.” Let the heavens hear and let the earth give ear, for the Lord speaks. When our Queen sits yearly upon her throne in Parliament, how closely every word she speaks is listened to! Word for word her speech is reported and sent from place to place to the ends of the earth. For she speaks as a mighty Queen, and “where the word of a king is, there is power” (Eccles. 8:4).

Reading: Isaiah 48

To the reader…

That word of the Lord, your Redeemer: have you ever read it as though it were spoken to you alone? “Thy Redeemer, thy God, Which teacheth thee, Which leadeth thee.” It is the beauty of faith that it takes this to itself, as if there were no one else on earth to whom the Lord spoke. Perhaps you hardly dare to do so; you feel too small and too sinful to be addressed so personally. Yet here He speaks not to the world in general, but to His poor and needy people.

If men listen to every word of an earthly sovereign, how much more should you listen when the Lord speaks! Let the heavens hear it and the earth give ear, but above all let your heart be still. He Who teaches you to profit will also lead you by the way that you should go. Then ask Him that you may receive that one word “thy” with power into your soul.
