Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: His going forth is prepared as the morning; and He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
Hosea 6:3

Yet another figure is added, which shows the fruit and effects of His coming: “He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.” His going forth is compared to the morning: glorious and certain. His coming is compared to rain: softening and fertilising. I think that in this former and latter rain we have a sweet figure of the manifestations of Christ to the soul.

The former rain, which comes first, is the first view of Christ which the soul receives. It is the time of first love, the day of espousals, when we go after the Lord in a land that was not sown (Jeremiah 2:2), when the Lord, as He says in Hosea 2:14, allures us into the wilderness. It is the first of the days of the Son of man, the time of which Job said, “Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me; when His candle shined upon my head, and when by His light I walked through darkness; as I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle” (Job 29:2-4).

“The days of my youth”: these are the days of his spiritual youth, when he first burned with love to Jesus and was full of zeal and warmth for His honour and glory. Then Christ first came as the former rain, which falls upon the seed committed to the earth and makes it spring up fragrant and vigorous.

Reading: Job 29

To the reader…

Do you still remember the days of your first love? The time when Christ first fell like a former rain upon your dry heart, when you went after Him and your soul was full of zeal for His honour? Perhaps you now sigh with Job, “Oh that I were as in months past.” The candle no longer shines so brightly upon your head, and you fear that all of that time was mere appearance.

Do not cast away that first rain. What fell upon the seed then made it spring up, and what the Lord has sown He does not let perish. That you long for those days proves that you have tasted how good He is. The same One Who came then as the former rain has also promised the latter rain. He will come to you again, softening and making fruitful, in His own time.
