Look Thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as Thou usest to do unto those that love Thy Name.
Psalm 119:132

The Lord looks upon His people with compassion. As after the flood He looked down from the height of His sanctuary upon Noah and all that were with him in the ark, and tender compassion flowed out of His heart, so He looks down from the height of His sanctuary upon all the poor, toiling, struggling pilgrims here below. He looks upon them with pity and compassion, out of His gracious and sympathising heart. He sees that some are harassed by temptations, others plagued by a sinful, unbelieving heart, others tossed about by circumstances. Others are wading deep through temporal trials, others are mourning over His absence, and others again are persecuted and cast out by men. Every heart knows its own bitterness, each has a weak place that the eye of the Lord sees, and the Lord, as a God of grace, looks down upon them and has compassion on them.

When He sees that they are caught in a snare, He pities them because they are so entangled. When He sees that they are drawn aside by the idolatry and evil of their fallen nature, He pities them because they wander. When He sees that they are assailed and harassed by the devil, He looks down upon them with compassion because of his assaults. But the Lord has great power to comfort His poor, suffering children, who toil and struggle through this waste, howling wilderness, for “help is laid upon One that is mighty” (cf. Ps. 89:19), Who “is able also to save them to the uttermost” (Heb. 7:25).

Reading: Hebrews 4

To the reader…

That word, “Look Thou upon me,” fits every need; where does it pinch with you? Are you harassed by temptations, plagued by a sinful, unbelieving heart, or are you wading deep through temporal trials? Are you mourning over His absence, or caught in a snare that you have laid for yourself? Every heart knows its own bitterness, and perhaps you think that no one sees yours. But the Lord looks down from the height of His sanctuary upon all the poor, toiling pilgrims, and He sees your weak place too.

And He does not look with a hard eye, but with tender compassion, as He once looked down upon Noah and his house in the ark. He has compassion on you when you are entangled, when your fallen nature makes you wander, when the devil assails you. Pray, then: “Look Thou upon me, and be merciful unto me.” For help is laid upon One that is mighty, Who is able to save to the uttermost, even in this waste, howling wilderness.
