To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.
Revelation 3:21

I have sometimes thought that the children of God dwell too much upon their enemies without, and too little upon their enemies within. The less you think of your adversaries without and the more of those within, the better it is for your soul. Turn your eyes away from the enemies without. However numerous and however formidable they may appear, they will never really harm you. Be on your guard against every enemy within; and if you fight, fight against the enemy that lies hidden and at work in your own bosom.

I would almost say to you, in the words of the king of Syria, “Fight neither with small nor great, save only with yourself.” I have always found that I am my own greatest enemy. I have never had an enemy that gave me so much trouble as my own heart. No one has ever done me half so much harm or tormented me half so much as what I have felt within myself. The daily sense of this makes me fear myself more than anyone in the world.

The devil too has been a cruel enemy. He has set before you many hopeless prospects and has been to you a prophet of evil, not of good. But he will be found a liar, if you are indeed one of God’s Israel. You will not die in the dark, as he has sometimes told you, nor in despair, and you will not be sent to hell laden with all your sins. This enemy of your soul will prove to be a liar. Even the accusations of your own guilty conscience will in the end prove to be liars.

God will prove Himself true, even when everyone else has been found unfaithful. What a mercy it is to have God on our side! Whom then should we fear, what then should we fear? “If God be for us, who can be against us?” But I would add: if God be against us, who can be for us? May the Lord, if it please Him, stamp upon the souls of those who fear His great Name a glorious and blessed evidence that all these mercies and promises are yours, so that you may have the comfort and He the glory!

Reading: Psalm 143

To the reader…

Who is your greatest enemy? Perhaps you think of people who oppose you, or of circumstances that oppress you. But whoever looks honestly within discovers that no one does him so much harm as his own heart. On top of that comes the devil, who whispers to you that you will die in the dark and in despair, laden with all your sins. Do you sometimes believe him?

Know, then, that he is a liar, and that he will prove a liar to everyone who belongs to God’s Israel. Even the accusations of your own conscience will not have the last word. God will prove Himself true. If God be for us, who can be against us? Ask Him, then, to stamp upon your soul the blessed evidence that these mercies are yours, so that you may have the comfort and He the glory.
