Het gebed van Salomo

Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: to Whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Galatians 1:3-5

Especially in the closing moments of His sufferings do we see how the Lord Jesus willingly gives Himself for our sins. Let us follow Him: into the dark garden, where under the overwhelming load of sin and sorrow He sweat great drops of blood; from there to the Jewish council and the judgment hall of Pilate; and from there to the cross on Calvary, where, as the climax of His humiliation, He was crucified between two malefactors. Then we see in these last moments of His sufferings and obedient death especially what the holy Lord endured when He offered Himself up to be made sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him (2 Cor. 5:21).

For in giving Himself for our sins, He took upon Himself all their guilt, penalty and punishment. He bore our sins in His own body on the tree as if they had been His own. For having voluntarily put Himself in the sinner’s place, He stood there as the Surety, of Whom justice demanded the uttermost.

Thus He endured not only the contradiction of sinners against Himself, but also, what was far harder to bear, the unbearable wrath of God. His Father hid His face from Him, pain drained His strength, and He hung, made a curse for us, between heaven and earth as a spectacle to men and angels. God the Father accepted this substitution, for it was according to His own eternal will and good pleasure that the Son of His love should thus give Himself for our sins. So He would put away all their guilt and condemnation, cast them behind God’s back, wash them clean in the fountain of His atoning blood, and blot them out for ever as a cloud from the sky.

Where would we be, what would we be, what hope would we have of escaping the wrath to come, without this blessed event, this solemn, divine reality: that the Son of God offered Himself up for our sins and so put them away for ever?

Reading: Galatians 1:1-10

To the reader…

There are days when you see only your sins, so heavy that you do not know how you will ever go free. Then follow the Lord Jesus in your thoughts into the dark garden, where He sweat great drops of blood, and from there to Calvary, where He hung between two malefactors. There He gave Himself for our sins. He took their guilt, penalty and punishment upon Himself, as if they were His own.

What men did to Him was heavy, but heavier still was that His Father hid His face from Him. That He bore, so that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. And the Father has accepted this substitution. Where would you be without it? Let your soul rest on it, then: what He has borne, you need no longer bear. Your sins have been washed away in His blood and blotted out as a cloud from the sky.
