To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna.
Revelation 2:17

The Lord’s sheep must first experience keen hunger to learn to value the manna, for “the full soul loatheth an honeycomb” (Prov. 27:7). More than that, as a general rule a painful experience is needed to create that appetite. Look at the labouring man. What an appetite he has! How he enjoys his food, however plain it may be! Where does that appetite come from? Why, from his hard work. So it is with the spiritual labourers, for there are such in the kingdom of God. “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden”; “Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life” (John 6:27); “In all labour there is profit” (Prov. 14:23).

He who labours under a burden of sin, against powerful temptations, a body of sin and death, and a whole host of lusts and corruptions, begins to long for a better righteousness than his own. We seldom cry for the living bread until we are almost starved. Then, when nothing but Jesus will do, God comes forward with this word: “I will feed you.” Sometimes it is a promise, sometimes a glimpse of Jesus, sometimes a sweet assurance of an interest in His blood and righteousness, sometimes a smile, sometimes a draught of His mercy, goodness and love. When a gospel truth is applied to the heart, when faith embraces it, hope anchors in it and love flows out towards it, the soul is divinely fed.

The hunger is sensibly satisfied: the Word of God tastes sweet, Jesus is received into the heart, and as the sheep lies chewing the cud, so the soul meditates and ponders upon the truth of God and enjoys it again and again. Never be satisfied with the mere letter of truth. Seek to know in your own personal and blessed experience the fulfilment of the word of Jesus: “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63).

Reading: Amos 8

To the reader…

Is your soul hungry? Are you labouring under a burden of sin, against temptations and corruptions that leave you weary and faint? It may feel like a punishment, but it is the very way by which the Lord awakens the appetite for the living Bread. The full soul loathes the honeycomb; the labourer, on the other hand, enjoys the plainest meal. So you too will learn to value the manna.

For when nothing but Jesus will do, God comes forward with His word: “I will feed you.” Sometimes it is a promise, sometimes a glimpse of Him, sometimes a quiet smile. Do not be satisfied, then, with the letter alone, however pure. Seek that His words may become spirit and life to you. Whoever hungers will not be sent away empty; it is to the weary and heavy laden that He calls, “Come unto Me.”
