Het gebed van Salomo

Vandaag

3 min. read

And if Thy people Israel be put to the worse before the enemy, because they have sinned against Thee; and shall return and confess Thy Name, and pray and make supplication before Thee in this house; then hear Thou from the heavens, and forgive the sin of Thy people Israel.
2 Chronicles 6:24-25

Is the devil our enemy? But what an advantage we give the devil by sin! Through not watching our way, through a lack of watchfulness and prayer, we first become entangled. That displeases the Lord. Then we grow weak through His withdrawing Himself, and when the enemy presses on, we are at last put to the worse before him. In such circumstances, were it not for the grace that is in Christ Jesus, the law would condemn us to hell, conscience would swallow us up in despair, and the devil would pour out his hellish shouts of triumph over the soul.

Solomon, as a type of the Mediator, prays for such. He does not speak to encourage anyone in sin, but he says: “If they shall return and confess Thy Name, and pray and make supplication before Thee in this house; then hear Thou from the heavens, and forgive the sin of Thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which Thou gavest to them and to their fathers” (2 Chron. 6:24-25). The Lord will work repentance and godly sorrow in the souls of His children. He will make them feel the bitterness of sin and of their own folly in having sinned against Him.

He will put forth His gracious finger to soften their hearts, to touch and melt their consciences, and to move them to “return” with prayer and supplication. And when He sees that, He will show His pardoning mercy and shed abroad His love in their hearts by the Holy Ghost.

But all this, and we must never forget it, comes through the Mediator. There is no merit in repentance and no virtue in tears. You might shed oceans of them, but they would not wash away one single sin. Your eyes might be a fountain of tears, but they would not blot out the sins, the crimson sins that have stained your conscience. It must be done by “a better sacrifice”: by the blood of atonement, the blood of the Lamb of God, shed on the cross and applied to the soul, sin is blotted out.

Reading: Proverbs 6:12-35

To the reader…

Reader, have you entangled your soul through carelessness and a lack of prayer? Do you feel how the Lord withdrew Himself, how you grew weak and how the enemy overpowered you? Then this petition of Solomon speaks to you in particular. He encourages no one in sin, but he prays for those who return, confess God’s Name and make supplication. And it is the Lord Himself Who softens the heart, melts the conscience and works that godly sorrow.

But never forget where forgiveness comes from. There is no merit in repentance and no virtue in tears; though you shed oceans of them, they would not wash away one sin. Only the blood of the Lamb of God, shed on the cross and applied to the soul, blots out crimson sins. So come with your tears, but do not lean on them. Look to the Mediator, and ask Him to shed abroad His love in your heart by the Holy Ghost.
