Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.
Isaiah 48:17

“Which teacheth thee to profit.” It is good for a child of God to test his religion by this mark, as God’s Word gives it. For instance, when you read a book, a religious book, lay it in this balance and weigh it by this test: Does it do my soul good? Is it to profit? What blessed feelings does it stir up in my heart? Am I convinced by reading it that my religion is shallow, and that I have yet to learn deeper things than I already know?

Does it wound me? Does it show me where I have lost the way? Does it show me more of the exceeding evil of sin than I have ever seen? When I lay it down, do I find that I am in a solemn, humble and spiritual frame? Then I can say that this book profits me, and that I am the better for it.

But if the book only hardens my heart and darkens my mind, so that I can think lightly of sin and of the evil of my nature, give way more easily to a temptation that surrounds me, walk loosely, watch less carefully that I am not entangled, and am strengthened and encouraged in carnality by the book I have read, O, then let me lay it aside. This is not taught of God! And how do I know that it is not taught of God? Because it does not profit my soul.

Reading: Ecclesiastes 12

To the reader…

How often do you lay down a religious book without asking yourself what it has done for your soul? Many words can fill the head and yet leave the heart cold, yes, lull the conscience to sleep, so that sin seems light and temptation sweet. But what the Lord teaches wounds first; it shows the exceeding evil of sin and lets us see that we have yet to learn deeper things than we already know.

Are you alarmed when you are weighed in this balance and found wanting? Then do not be afraid to become solemn and humble; that is no loss, but the fruit of His teaching. He is the Lord, your Redeemer, Who teaches you to profit and leads you by the way that you should go. Lay aside, then, what hardens you, and seek His Word, which does the soul good.
