Lead me in Thy truth, and teach me.
Psalm 25:5

When a man has come within the reach of the truth and feels its power, he at once lays hold of it as something suited to his case. It is food for which he spiritually hungers, and the voice of God sounds so plainly in it that feelings arise in his heart which he never knew before.

The Lord sometimes works very powerfully in this way. A man may have sat for years under error. Again and again he inwardly resisted it, because he had a dislike of it, and yet he hardly dared let it go, for fear that this would be a false step. But let this man in God’s providence come within the reach of the truth, or bring him into a position where he must associate with those who love the truth, and at once he embraces it. In this way, or sometimes by reading the books of those who love the truth, a light falls into his soul by which he sees the truth, and the error he did not see before becomes distasteful to him.

All that time he was under Divine teaching without knowing it. But now he embraces the truth, which not only suits his needs and on which his heart really desires to feed, but which also glorifies God. I know this from experience. When it pleased the Lord to lay eternal things with power and clearness on my conscience, there arose almost at once an inclination towards God’s truth, and a desire to know it and enjoy it. A soul may for months or years be entangled in all manner of errors and perplexities, while behind them there is still present an inclination and a desire towards God’s truth.

Where God has planted life in the soul, then, a need of the light will arise, though that light come in only through a chink. This will in time lead to greater revelations of the truth, and these will bring the soul to the palace of the King. Then she will not be a stranger walking outside the grounds and peeping through the fence of the park, but a child playing at home in the garden and going in and out of the rooms at will.

Reading: Psalm 119:161-176

To the reader…

Do you recognise this? Perhaps you have long been under error, with an inward dislike of it, and yet without daring to let go of what you knew. Then this is a word for you. Where God has planted life in the soul, there a hunger for the light arises, though that light come in only through a chink. Perhaps all that time you were under Divine teaching without knowing it.

The longing for God’s truth that lived in you even behind all kinds of perplexities is no accident; it is His work. And the Lord does not leave it at a chink. He leads the soul on to greater revelations of the truth, until she no longer peeps through the fence as a stranger, but is at home as a child in the palace of the King. Pray then with the Psalmist, “Lead me in Thy truth, and teach me,” and wait for His further light.
