If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: and He is the propitiation for our sins.
1 John 2:1-2

Union with the Lord Jesus as a living Head brings forth an intimate communion with Him. For when He communicates grace out of His own fulness, there arises in the soul a sweet and holy fellowship with Him, as He is seen by faith upon His throne of grace as the Mediator between God and men. These communications of divine light and life out of His fulness enlighten the eyes of the understanding and give the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him (Eph. 1:17, 18). So they raise up in the heart a gracious view of His beauty and blessedness, of His grace and glory (Ps. 112:4; Isa. 33:17; Luke 1:78, 79; 2 Pet. 1:19). This is drinking of the fountain of life and seeing light in God’s light (Ps. 36:9); and this is “the light of life” which the Lord gives to those who follow Him (John 8:12).

When the soul walks in the light of these gracious teachings, it sees the blood of Jesus as a fountain of infinite value and unspeakable efficacy against sin and uncleanness. It sees His righteousness as a most blessed covering for all its shame and nakedness, and His bleeding, dying love as a most healing balm for a wounded conscience and a heavenly cordial for a fainting spirit. By these teachings, and in no other way, is the reality of true religion and vital godliness learned. No truly exercised soul can be satisfied with seeing salvation merely as a doctrine of the gospel, a firm and certain truth shining forth from the inspired page.

We are sincerely glad that the way of salvation is so clearly revealed in the Word of truth, and that the life, light and power of the Spirit are in it, so that we can bear inward witness to the truth and certainty of the written testimony. But all this light and knowledge in the letter of the truth falls short when compared with a salvation discovered and revealed to one’s own heart and conscience.

Reading: Galatians 1:11-24

To the reader…

Is it enough for you that the way of salvation stands clearly written in the Word? We may be sincerely glad of that. But an exercised soul cannot be satisfied with salvation as a mere doctrine, however firm and certain it may be. You long for it to be revealed to you in your own heart and conscience as well, and that longing is good.

For in His light we see light. When He gives light and life out of His fulness, the soul sees His blood as a fountain against sin and uncleanness, His righteousness as a covering for all its shame, and His dying love as a balm for a wounded conscience. Drink, then, from that fountain of life. Seek Him upon His throne of grace, and ask Him to give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him.
