Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
Hebrews 12:1

As the soul, through painful trials and exercises, discovers more and more of its own weakness and helplessness, it needs more patient endurance to hold out to the end; for only he that endureth to the end shall be saved. Many run well for a time. With many it seems as though, by their earnestness and activity, their zeal and fire, they will gain the prize in a few strides – as though they would win the victory by one day’s exertion, or gain heaven by an hour’s earnestness. But they are the first to give up. They are the first who, like the children of Ephraim, turn back in the day of battle, and the first to surrender to the enemy when they are hard pressed.

Many run, but few win. Sin brings some to a fall, error ruins others; the world chokes the zeal of one, and prosperity quenches the fire of another. So the course becomes strewn with the fallen, and only a few struggle on to the end. Grace alone makes the prize sure. This is because the grace of God in the heart is of an abiding nature, and therefore remains when all else is lost. Natural faith soon dies out, human hope fades away, and fleshly zeal and earnestness are soon quenched to the last spark.

But grace is of an abiding nature, for it comes from a divine fountain. “The righteous also shall hold on his way” (Job 17:9), because “grace reigns through righteousness unto eternal life” (Romans 5:21). Therefore those who possess grace shall endure to the end. They shall not only run the race, but also win the prize. To them applies all that Paul said of himself: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing” (2 Timothy 4:7, 8).

Reading: 2 Timothy 4

To the reader…

Do you see, dear reader, how the course is strewn with the fallen, and do you fear that you too will one day drop out of the race? Many began with earnestness and fire, and gave up when the battle began. Natural faith dies out, human hope fades away, and fleshly zeal is quenched to the last spark. If you look at yourself, you have reason enough to tremble.

Do not look at yourself, then, but at grace. It is of an abiding nature, for it comes from a divine fountain, and it reigns through righteousness unto eternal life. That is why the righteous shall hold on his way; not because he is strong, but because grace remains in his heart when all else is lost. Whoever has received that grace will not only run, but will also receive the crown of righteousness, with all those who love His appearing.
