Mozes’ zegen over Israël

Vandaag

2 min. read

Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD.
Deuteronomy 33:29

The happiness of Israel springs from nothing less than God and heaven, and is directed towards them. That, then, is the reason of it. “Happy art thou, O Israel.” Why are you happy? Happy, because God has chosen you unto salvation in the Person of His dear Son. Happy, because He loves you with an everlasting love.

Happy, because He sometimes gives you to love Him in return. Happy, because He has called you by His grace, that He may one day crown you with eternal glory. Happy, because mansions of eternal bliss are prepared for you in heaven, far above all the storms and billows of this troubled world. Happy, because the Lord is your eternal Portion—because God is your Father and Friend, Jesus your Saviour, Husband and elder Brother, and the Holy Spirit your Comforter, Teacher and Sanctifier. Therefore, “Happy art thou, O Israel.”

You suffering saints of the Most High, your lot here below may be hard as regards outward circumstances. Painful may be the exercises in which almost daily you feel the rebellion and hopeless corruption of your carnal mind. Heavy temptations may be continually your portion; many a thorn and sharp briar may lie in your path. And the road may be so rough and rugged that you sometimes feel yourselves of all men the most miserable. That you certainly would be, were it not for the grace of God in your heart and the glory reserved for you on the other side of the grave. Yet with all this, though your trials and sorrows were a thousand times worse, it may be said of you, “Happy, thrice happy art thou, O Israel!”

Reading: Lamentations 3:19-33

To the reader…

Suffering soul, do you feel today of all men the most miserable? Is your road rough and rugged, are there thorns in your path, and do you feel daily the rebellion of your own heart? Then the word “happy” may sound strange in your ears. Yet it is spoken of just such people, not because of their circumstances, but because of what God is to them.

Your happiness lies not here below, but in Him Who loves you with an everlasting love. He has called you by His grace; He is your eternal Portion, your Father and Friend; Jesus is your Saviour, and the Holy Spirit your Comforter. And if He sometimes gives you to love Him in return, if only for a moment, is that not a token of His work in you? Though your sorrows were a thousand times worse, the mansions above the storms of this world are still prepared for you.
