Deliver me from all my transgressions.
Psalm 39:8

What? “All my transgressions?” Yes! “All my transgressions.” You see that David was still but a sinner. What is transgression? It is stepping over the line: disobeying the Word of God, the will of God, the mind of God, the commands of the Spirit in a tender conscience and the working of godly fear in the soul. But how is this? How can a man have this frame, “And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in Thee”, and yet feel the working of vile transgressions in his heart?

It is a mystery, and it will always remain a mystery, except to the exercised children of God. This is the cause of the mystery: they carry within them a polluted and defiled nature; a nature wholly incurable, a nature so steeped in evil that in this life it is utterly incurable. Now David felt the workings of these transgressions. He knew what it meant to have a lustful eye, a backsliding heart, a polluted imagination, a wandering, roving and sensual mind, and to be continually transgressing God’s will and word. He knew what it was to be a mourning captive, a poor disconsolate soul, exercised daily and sometimes hourly by trial.

And how could he know this? Because he waited for the Lord, he received light to see it; because he waited for the Lord, he had life to feel it. Because he set his hope in the Lord and had his anchor there, he could feel all the better the swell of the sea of disquiet within him. But sin was his burden. It was not his joy; it was not his glory. As a transgressor he could not feel at ease or be happy. It was to the confusion of his heart and the grief of his soul that he was a transgressor.

Reading: Psalm 51

To the reader…

Do you not understand yourself? You have set your hope on the Lord, and yet you feel in your heart the workings of a lustful eye, a backsliding heart, a wandering and sensual mind. How can these go together? It is a mystery, but nothing strange to the exercised children of God. They carry within them a nature that is incurable in this life, and they feel it just because they have received light and life.

For whoever has his anchor in the Lord feels the swell of the sea all the more. If sin is your burden and not your joy, if you cannot be at ease under it, if it is to the confusion of your heart and the grief of your soul that you are a transgressor, then you stand where David stood. Do not push it aside, then, but bring it to the Lord and cry with him: “Deliver me from all my transgressions.”
