Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
Hebrews 12:1

If we would be runners in this race, we must run it as God has appointed. In the infallible Word of truth a course is marked out for us. In all contests where strength or skill is concerned, certain rules are laid down which must be strictly observed; they are usually called the rules of the game. If these rules are not kept, the winner receives no prize. This holds good in grace as in nature, for the heavenly race as for the earthly.

If, then, the rules laid down in the Word of truth are broken, a man may think he is running the heavenly race, but his effort is not crowned with a prize. For he has not run according to the rules laid down by the supreme Judge of the contest. This may seem hard, but it is not my doctrine; it is the doctrine of the apostle: “And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully” (2 Tim. 2:5), that is, according to the rules laid down for the contest. It is therefore not merely running hard that gains the prize; what matters is that you run the race as God would have you run it.

You may choose your own course, mark out your own arena, choose your own pace, fix your own time or make your own rules. But will the Lord award you the prize, even if you come in first? No. He says, “I Myself have appointed a certain race that must be run, and I have set down the rules in My inspired Word. If you run, then, you must run the race exactly as I have marked it out, or you will not receive the prize or the crown.”

If a man, then, has received no Divine teaching, so that he knows what the race is as God Himself has laid it down, he has in fact not yet even begun it. The first thing needful to run the race is to see it with an enlightened eye, as it is set before us in the Holy Scriptures. For this Divine light is needed. But because we are all dead by nature, we need Divine life and power, not only to see it, but also to run it when we see it.

Reading: 2 Timothy 2:1-15

To the reader…

There are times when a solemn thought makes us stand still: one may run hard and yet receive no crown. “If a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.” A course of our own, a pace of our own, rules of our own: it may look zealous in the eyes of men, but the supreme Judge asks whether we run the race as He has marked it out in His Word.

Does that alarm you, and do you feel that by nature you are dead and cannot even see the way? Then you are not far from the truth. For that is just the first thing the soul must learn: she needs Divine light to see the race, and Divine life and power to run it. Do not pray, then, for a way of your own, but for an enlightened eye for God’s way. What God asks of you He can also give you, and to whom He gives the light He also gives the strength.
