Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God Which teacheth thee to profit, Which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.
Isaiah 48:17

When the warm rays of redemption by grace appear upon the horizon, what a blessing those rays are! They raise up hope in the believer’s heart, because they show him the way of escape and the truths of salvation. He sees that his sins may be pardoned, so that he may escape the damnation of hell, be with Jesus and dwell with Him for ever in the blessed courts above. Then He is a “Redeemer,” and He is also “the Holy One of Israel.”

How holy is the Lord, because He is the holy Son of God! He is the eternal Son of the eternal Father, in truth and love, and as such He is holy. For the seraphim and cherubim in the temple cry to Him day and night without ceasing, “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts!” Holy is the Father! Holy is the Son! And holy is the Holy Spirit! So He, as the Son of God, the second Person in the glorious Trinity, is “the Holy One of Israel.”

All His thoughts, when He was upon earth, were perfectly holy. All His words were holy; all His sighs, groans, tears and sorrows were holy. His sufferings even unto death were holy, and His blood and obedience were holy. Therefore He is “the Holy One of Israel,” in Whom a holy God can take delight. This, then, is the Jesus to Whom the eyes of our faith must look. Here is encouragement for a storm-tossed soul, and here is redemption for a poor, guilty sinner: a precious Redeemer for him who feels his need of a Redeemer—“the Holy One of Israel.”

Reading: Isaiah 54

To the reader…

Today you are pointed to a Redeemer, if you feel your need of Him and are a storm-tossed soul. Perhaps the word “holy” alarms you rather than comforts you. You know how unholy your thoughts, your words and your ways are. But see here: He Who is your Redeemer is also the Holy One of Israel. His thoughts, His words, His tears and His sufferings even unto death were perfectly holy.

Just there lies your hope. What you do not have, He has; and in Him a holy God can take delight. Then fix the eyes of your faith upon this Jesus. Let the warm rays of His redemption, though they are as yet only upon the horizon, raise up hope in your heart. For a poor, guilty sinner there is no dearer Name than this: your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
