Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.
Isaiah 48:17

There are many among God’s elect who have never yet lost their fleshly standing; whose sinews of self-righteousness have never been cut; who have never yet, in the despair of their sinking soul, fallen in body or spirit into the dust before the face of God. But it is of no use for them to talk of “a blessed Jesus” if they have not been brought to this point; it is of no use for them to extol the blood and righteousness of Christ, and heaven and salvation and all such glorious things. These eternal realities are altogether out of place with them; they have not come by them in the right way.

Therefore all the fine sayings and glowing descriptions of Christ and of His glorious Person and offices, which many eloquent ministers set before their hearers, do not reach those hearers. It is like speaking Arabic to people who understand only English. They do not understand the language; it sounds altogether strange in their ears. Perhaps they think the strange tongue, the melodious sounds of the language of Canaan, sound very beautiful. But the real meaning, any witness of God in their conscience or any spark of Christ’s glory in their heart, they know no more than you or I know a dialect from the heart of Africa.

The process that cuts self-righteousness in the soul entirely to pieces, root and branch, is the only process that brings the glorious enjoyment of Gospel blessings. Many people make such a mistake about the way. If I had gone this morning not westward but eastward, I should certainly not be here now. In the same way a man can never come to heaven unless he travels heavenward, Zionward, in the way that God has shown His children. It is a mistake to think that we shall go to heaven if we know nothing of divine teaching in the soul.

Reading: Acts 9:1-22

To the reader…

It may be that you have at some time fallen into the dust before the face of God. Have the sinews of your self-righteousness been cut, so that you could expect nothing more from yourself? It is a painful way, and the flesh shrinks back from it. But without that way the language of Canaan remains a strange tongue: beautiful to the ear, but without power in the heart.

Are you lying low now in the despair of a sinking soul, and do you think that all is lost with you? Then see whether it is not just here that God shows His children the way, Zionward. What you are suffering now cuts self-righteousness away root and branch, so that the blood and righteousness of Christ do not remain fine words to you, but become the glorious enjoyment of Gospel blessings. He Who leads you so teaches you to profit.
