And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh.
1 Timothy 3:16

If we have received the right teaching and the right spiritual leading, we shall not find the incarnation a meaningless, dry or unprofitable subject. It is the “great mystery of godliness,” and therefore it contains and works all godliness. There never has been one truly godly thought, one truly godly feeling or desire, yea, not one godly word or work, no godly heart or godly life, nor ever will be, that does not spring from and is not maintained by the great mystery of an incarnate God. There may be, as there often is, a natural piety, a tithing of mint and anise and cummin (Matt. 23:23), and a great quantity of so-called good works as self-righteousness, apart from the grace that dwells in the Lord, the Lamb.

But godliness formed by a new and heavenly birth, with all its attendant fruits and graces, can flow only from the fulness of a Covenant Head, Who communicates life to the members of His mystical body. And we know that this Covenant Head is the Son of God, once manifest in the flesh and now exalted at the right hand of the Father. How plain are His own gracious and true words on this point, that all life is in Him and comes from Him: “Because I live, ye shall live also” (John 14:19); “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6); “Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood, ye have no life in you” (John 6:53); “I am the Vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing” (John 15:5).

Reading: Ephesians 4:1-16

To the reader…

It may be that you find so little true godliness in yourself that you sometimes fear there is nothing of the life of God in you. Then do not look inward any longer to find the fountain there. There has never been one true godly desire, one sincere word or one holy thought that did not spring from the great mystery of an incarnate God. All else, however pious it may seem, is but self-righteousness, apart from the grace that dwells in the Lamb.

Do you hear what He Himself says: “Without Me ye can do nothing”? That is no hard word for a poor soul, but a sweet invitation. The Covenant Head was manifest in the flesh and now sits at the right hand of the Father, and out of His fulness life flows to the members of His body. He has said, “Because I live, ye shall live also.” Abide, then, in Him, and He will not leave you without fruit in your barrenness.
