Een beschutting over al wat heerlijk is

And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence. And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain.
Isaiah 4:5-6

The sun in Holy Scripture stands for the Sun of righteousness, but also for the burning sun of temptation. “Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me” (Song of Solomon 1:6). The bride here uses the figure of the sun of temptation, which had made her black. When we read here, then, of “the heat,” the sun of temptation is no doubt meant, which strikes the soul with its burning rays. From that we want shelter.

If a man is smitten by temptations, will he not be dried up by them (as the ground is scorched by the sun), unless he can find shelter from them? Temptation makes him like the parched heath in the wilderness and drains all his strength, unless he finds shade and protection. This hiding place is the Lord of life and glory. Is not the lust of the flesh ever at work? From painful experience I know it is so.

But where are we to find shade from these temptations? If we are left to them, we shall utterly fall. Whoever knows what temptation is knows how utterly helpless he stands before it, except by grace. And unless temptation can be restrained, it will take the soul captive and bring it to ruin and decay. How, then, is a child of God to escape temptations, and their filth, guilt and power in his conscience?

Only one way is left him: “a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat.” That is: to hide himself in Christ; to seek refuge under the shadow of His wings; to wash in the fountain opened for sin and for uncleanness; to shelter under the glory and the righteousness which is unto all and upon all them that believe. When a child of God feels temptations at work in his heart, he is taught by the Spirit to flee to the Lord, as a child runs to its mother when it is frightened.

He flees to God’s grace to cover and pardon them, and to the power of the Lord to restrain them. So the Lord of life and glory is “a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat.”

Reading: Psalm 27

To the reader…

There are days when the sun of temptation burns upon you. Do you feel how the lust of the flesh is ever at work, and how it drains your strength until you are like a parched heath in the wilderness? Perhaps you are ashamed and think a child of God cannot be like that. But whoever knows what temptation is also knows how utterly helpless he stands before it, except by grace.

Only one way is then left you: flee to Him Who is a tabernacle for a shadow from the heat. Flee as a frightened child runs to its mother, without first asking whether it may. Hide yourself in Christ, seek refuge under the shadow of His wings, wash in the fountain opened for sin and for uncleanness. His grace can cover and pardon your sin, and His power can restrain the temptation.
