I will pour My Spirit upon thy seed, and My blessing upon thine offspring.
Isaiah 44:3

The first work of God’s Spirit is conviction of sin. “And when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin” (John 16:8). When Peter preached on the day of Pentecost and the Holy Ghost accompanied the Word with power, the hearers were pricked in their heart.

Then God pours out His Spirit upon the seed of Zion as a Spirit of grace and of supplications. This has been done emphatically, according to His own promise: “I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications” (Zech. 12:10). This Spirit the Lord always pours upon the soul when it pleases Him to quicken it. When He would give Ananias the clearest proof of Paul’s conversion, He says, “Behold, he prayeth.”

But in the pouring out of the Spirit the Lord also pours upon the soul the Spirit of faith. For of faith we are expressly told that it is “the gift of God” (Eph. 2:8), and the Holy Ghost declares that it is “the fruit of the Spirit” (Gal. 5:22). Only in this way does the gospel prove to be “the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.” Without the Spirit, then, no faith, and without faith no salvation.

The Lord also gives the seed of Zion, when He pours out His Spirit upon them, a good hope through grace. For the Spirit discovers Christ, His love, grace and blood, and by this inward discovery He raises up a sweet hope in His salvation, “as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.”

Reading: Acts 2:29-42

To the reader…

Perhaps you can say little more of yourself than that you are a sinner. You are pricked in your heart and find nothing in yourself but guilt. Then do not fear that this is a sign that God has forsaken you. Conviction of sin is the very first work of His Spirit. Those whom He quickens He first teaches to know themselves; and those whom He has taught in this way He also teaches to pray.

Can you do nothing but sigh and cry? Then it is said of you too, “Behold, he prayeth.” That Spirit of grace and of supplications also works faith, which is the gift of God, and discovers to you Christ, His love, grace and blood. So a hope grows that is as an anchor of the soul, sure and stedfast. Keep on crying; He pours out His Spirit upon the seed of Zion.
