And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh.
1 Timothy 3:16

The Word of truth says, “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh.” Therefore no one can have godliness in heart, lip and life without an experimental knowledge of this great mystery. And if we possess no godliness, there can be no salvation. Otherwise we should have to open the gates of bliss to the ungodly, who “shall not stand in the judgment” (Ps. 1:5), and deny the “ungodliness” against which “the wrath of God is revealed from heaven” (Rom. 1:18). It is the truth, “the truth as it is in Jesus,” which alone “makes free”; and it is the truth, “the truth as it is in Jesus,” which alone both sanctifies and makes free: “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy Word is truth” (John 17:17).

How supremely important it is, then, that we ourselves should come to know the truth, in our hearts and consciences, by Divine teaching and Divine testimony! Then, delivered from bondage, darkness, ignorance and error, in the liberty of God’s blessed love and mercy, and sanctified by His Spirit and grace, we may walk before Him in the light of His countenance. And since in the Person of the incarnate Son of God “are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge,” what a blessing it is to look up in faith to Him Who sits at the right hand of the Father! What a blessing to receive out of His fulness that communication of wisdom and grace which not only enlightens us with the light of the living, but also makes us partakers of His holiness, and so makes us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.

Reading: 1 Timothy 3

To the reader…

How often on this day the birth of Christ is remembered everywhere; but do you know anything of that great mystery in your own heart? God was manifest in the flesh; that is no cold doctrine, but the fountain of all true godliness. Without an experimental knowledge of it, all piety remains outward, and the soul has nothing from it.

Do you long, then, for more light, more liberty, more holiness? Then look to Him Who sits at the right hand of the Father. In Him are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and out of His fulness a poor, ignorant soul may receive. Only the truth as it is in Jesus makes free and sanctifies. Pray, then, that He Himself may teach you in your heart and conscience, so that, delivered from bondage and darkness, you may walk in the light of His countenance.
