Het onderhouden van het geestelijk leven

Vandaag

3 min. read

I the LORD do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.
Isaiah 27:3

Leaning upon the Lord with a fixed heart is also a blessed means of maintaining the life of God in the soul. That holds good under all circumstances, under all trials and temptations, under all difficulties and perplexities, amid a whole storm of objections and reasonings of the carnal mind, the painful thrusts of our relentless and unwearied adversary, and every obstacle without or within that blocks our path. This too is indispensable to the life of faith. “The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force” (Matt. 11:12).

It is not folding the hands and crying “Peace, peace” that will bring us to heaven. No, nor will a sound creed, a form of godliness or a name to live do it. That is not running the race set before us, or fighting the good fight of faith, or wrestling against principalities, powers and spiritual wickedness in high places. Sometimes we are tempted to pride and sometimes to despair. The only remedy for both these maladies of the soul is leaning upon the Person and work, the blood, the love and the grace of the Lord Jesus, so far as He has been revealed to our soul and according to the measure of faith given to us. Leaning upon Him at every step is the only way to get through.

The last gracious means we name is living, walking and acting in the daily fear of God. This is surely a most blessed fountain of life to depart from the snares of death. Only when this fountain of life springs up in the soul (Prov. 14:27) and waters the conscience and makes it tender, and when the heart becomes fruitful, the affections heavenly and the spirit soft and contrite, can the power of grace be maintained within.

This heavenly grace of the fear of God, the treasure of the believer, the beginning and the end of wisdom, makes and keeps the eye single, the ear attentive, the smell quick and keen, the taste delicate, the arm strong, the hand open and the foot wary. And so he goes on, amid a thousand snares and temptations, towards a heavenly kingdom, his eyes looking right on and his eyelids straight before him (Prov. 4:25).

Reading: Isaiah 27

To the reader…

Tempted soul, are you tossed to and fro, now towards pride and then again towards despair? Is a storm of objections and reasonings raging within you, while the adversary deals his painful thrusts? A form of godliness or a name to live will not carry you through, nor will crying “Peace, peace.” There is but one remedy: leaning at every step upon the Person and work, the blood, the love and the grace of the Lord Jesus.

Perhaps you have little faith; then lean upon Him with that little. And ask Him for the fear of His Name, that fountain of life which makes the conscience tender and the heart fruitful. Hear what He Himself says of His vineyard: “I the LORD do keep it; I will water it every moment.” He does not leave His own to themselves, but keeps them night and day, so that with their eyes looking right on they go forward to the heavenly kingdom.
