Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Matthew 5:6

Hart1 says, “The ways of God’s dealing with His children, though alike in their general parts, are nevertheless so various that the paths of one child of God cannot be traced out by those of another; that no patterns can be laid down for Christian conversion, Christian experience, Christian usefulness or Christian conversation.” I heartily agree with what I have just quoted. I do believe that Christ is not revealed without a previous condemnation by the law, but who shall determine how strong that must be or how long it must last? Who shall take compass and rule in hand and mark out a circle within which the Almighty must move, or a line along which He must go? Let him who determines this first prune all the trees of the forest after one prescribed model and in the same proportions.

Let him examine some unknown leaf from an Indian forest and say, “This is no leaf at all; it is not notched or scalloped like the only leaf I have taken as my standard, that of the oak. Therefore I reject it as a contemptible counterfeit, a worthless imitation, the work of some ingenious artist.” To such a critic one would say in vain, “But look, sir, is it not green? Does it not spring from a branch? Does it not perform all the functions of a leaf? Does it not give off through its pores and veins all the superfluous moisture, and at the same time breathe in the carbonic acid from the air, which, by uniting with the sap, becomes the nourishment of the tree?” For he would answer, “I do not care what it does. I say it is not notched and scalloped, it is not like an oak leaf, and therefore away with it!”

Let us apply this. I believe that some children of God have not felt the terrors of the law as many others have. But if they have felt themselves lost, guilty, condemned and without hope or help, then the law has been at work in their conscience. Yet I look more to the deliverance and the effects it produces. Who, hearing their simple testimonies, will say that their leaf is not green?

Reading: John 1:35-52

1 Hart was the writer of many hymns, which were used in worship by Philpot and other Baptists.

To the reader…

That word “blessed” holds good for those who hunger and thirst, even when you sometimes measure yourself by another’s path and fear that your leaf is not the right one, because you have not felt the terrors of the law as deeply as others. Who shall take the compass in hand and mark out a circle within which the Almighty must move? He deals with His children in His own way, and no two paths are alike.

Do not ask first of all, then, how long or how heavy it was, but whether you have ever felt yourself lost, guilty and without hope or help, and whether there is in your heart a hunger and thirst after righteousness. Are not these the signs that the leaf is green? Such people the Lord calls blessed, and His Word stands firm: they shall be filled.
