De menselijke natuur van Christus

For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
Colossians 2:9

It has been the purpose of the Father from all eternity to glorify His dear Son. Both in the plan and in its execution He has shown how deep are His infinite wisdom, power and love. The eternal Son of God was to unite intimately and indissolubly to Himself, in His Divine Person, the flesh and blood of the children, so that in that character He might make visible the riches of the highest grace, the heights and depths of eternal love and the fulness of the uncreated glory of a Triune JEHOVAH. That has been from all eternity the fixed plan and the fixed purpose of the great and glorious, self-existent I AM. And the whole of creation, providence and all the events and circumstances in time and space were originally directed to the carrying out of this original plan.

Creation, with all its wonders of power and wisdom, was not needed for the happiness or the glory of the self-existent JEHOVAH. Father, Son and Holy Ghost had from all eternity that holy, intimate communion and mutual fellowship with each other, that mutual love and unspeakable friendship of three distinct Persons and yet but one God, to which creation could add nothing and from which it could take nothing away. Time, with all its events, is but a moment; space, with all its dimensions, is but a speck compared with the existence of a God Who inhabiteth eternity and thereby fills all time and all space.

That a self-existent God has more than enough in His own happiness and His own glory is to a believing heart a truth as self-evident as the existence of God Himself. But it pleased the holy Triune JEHOVAH that His heavenly glory should be manifested outwardly. That was to be brought about by the incarnation of the Son of God, the second Person of the holy Trinity.

Reading: Colossians 2:1-15

To the reader…

You who sometimes feel so small and insignificant that you wonder whether the great God can think of you at all, consider this: He Who inhabits eternity, Who fills all time and all space, did not need your worship in order to be happy. Father, Son and Holy Ghost were from all eternity complete in Themselves. And yet it pleased Him to manifest His glory outwardly, and that not at a distance, but in the flesh and blood of the children.

Look, then, to Him in Whom dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. There is the way of access for a poor sinner: not a God Who remains hidden in unapproachable light, but the Son Who has taken our nature. Is your heart empty, your wisdom short and your strength spent? In Him is fulness, enough for an eternity. It was the Father’s purpose from all eternity to glorify His dear Son; whoever, then, comes poor and empty to that Son walks the way that God Himself has made.
