And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Acts 20:32

Have you not sometimes felt the word of truth working holy, heavenly feelings and affections in your heart? But you say, “I cannot deny that I have experienced this, but if it is so, why am I as I am? Why so dark for weeks and months together? Why such cold thoughts? Why such a dead frame? Why so shut up in bondage? Why so harassed by Satan? Why so plagued by a host of fears and doubts? Why is the Lord so absent? Why is sin so present? Why does He shut out my prayer? Why does He let me stumble in the dark like those who long for the morning?”

May we not often answer these complaints: “Hast thou not procured this unto thyself?” (Jer. 2:17). “Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither His ear heavy, that it cannot hear: but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you” (Isa. 59:1-2). Is there no Achan in the camp? No wedge of gold, no Babylonish garment in the tent? Has no secret sin been committed, no idol set up in the heart?

But even if that is so, it may be to show you your weakness, to burn up your “wood, hay, stubble,” to bring you more needy and naked to His feet, to destroy your self-righteousness and carnality, and to break the right arm of human strength. Those very trials, fears, doubts, temptations, troubles and burdens by which your soul is so harassed are there to empty you, that God may fill you; to strip you, that He may clothe you; to bring you down, that He may lift you up; to bring you to nothing, that Christ may be all in all.

Have you ever experienced something like this in your soul: the deeper you sank in self, the more suitable and precious the Redeemer seemed? Have there not been moments when, in the midst of your trials, light and life, liberty and love flowed in, when you could embrace Jesus in the arms of living faith, and when you felt that with such feelings you could die in peace? Then you have received the inheritance. What is this but the inheritance: the kingdom of God in the soul, which “is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost” (Rom. 14:17)?

And by what did you get it? By your promises, vows, resolutions, exertions, doings and duties? No, it was “the word of God’s grace”: a sweet promise, exactly suited to you, a portion of Scripture opened to your heart. You almost put it aside, because you felt you did not deserve that God should even look upon such a wretch as you. Yet it was this “word of God’s grace” that brought this foretaste, this earnest of the inheritance above, into your soul here below.

Reading: Isaiah 59

To the reader…

Sometimes you too ask, “Why am I as I am? Why so dark, so cold, so plagued by doubt? Why is the Lord so absent and sin so present?” Then search your heart honestly, whether there is no Achan in the camp, no hidden idol standing between you and God. The Lord’s hand is not shortened; it is our iniquities that separate.

But do not despair because of it. These dark ways too are there to empty you, that He may fill you; to bring you down, that He may lift you up; to bring you to nothing, that Christ may be all. Think back to that moment when a word of His grace reached your heart, when you scarcely dared to receive it because you were so unworthy. That was no fancy, but a foretaste of the inheritance. He Who gave you that will not forsake His own work.
