Christus’ hemelvaart

And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight.
Acts 1:9

Consider for a moment the strength of this testimony. Could these eleven men have been deceived, or have been mistaken in what they had so personally seen? Most of them afterwards sealed with their lives the truth of what they then saw. They saw, then, that He with Whom they had held such sweet converse was taken up before their eyes, and they followed His ascension until a cloud received Him out of their sight. How could they then have a more certain testimony to the fulfilment of His own words: “I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father” (John 16:28)? And again: “Go to My brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto My Father, and your Father; and to My God, and your God” (John 20:17).

But to leave not the slightest doubt in their minds, to seal it as powerfully as possible upon their hearts, and to assure them of His return, it pleased the Lord to add a heavenly testimony to what they had seen with their own eyes: “And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:10, 11).

To the reader…

How is it with you, reader, when you think of your Saviour? Are you sometimes afraid that it is all imagination, that you have been mistaken in what you thought you tasted? The Lord knew how weak the faith of His own is. Therefore He not only let them see with their own eyes how He was taken up, but added a testimony from heaven, so that not the slightest doubt would remain.

So carefully does He deal with doubting hearts. “I ascend unto My Father, and your Father; and to My God, and your God.” He did not go away to forget His own, but to live for them. And this same Jesus will so come again. Do not, then, only stand gazing up into heaven with longing, but wait with hope for Him Who has promised to return.
