Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Hebrews 7:25

The word “uttermost” has to my feeling something very sweet about it and is full of meaning. In my judgment two things are expressed by it. In the first place, the word, in the sense of “to the very extremity” or “to the end,” seems to set forth the hopeless condition of those whom He saves. In the second place, it seems also to express the complete sufficiency and omnipotence of that almighty arm which can pluck a poor sinner out of the lowest hell. The Lord Jesus Christ had a great work to accomplish.

Would God send His only-begotten Son into the world to do a little work? Would God and man be united in one glorious Person to do a little work? Would an everlasting covenant have been made between the three Persons of the Trinity to do a little work? And would the only-begotten Son of God have come out of the bosom of His Father, where He dwelt from eternity, to do a little work?

Does not this very act of the Lord Jesus Christ, that He united our nature to His own divine and glorious Person, already show clearly how great the salvation must be, if such an act was needed to accomplish it? And does it not at the same time show how deeply man must have sunk, that such a sacrifice was necessary? Nothing would suffice but God’s co-equal and co-eternal Son. He, Who was from everlasting to everlasting, had to humble Himself so low that He bled and died to redeem us from the fall.

He had to descend into the depth into which we had sunk and into which our first father had plunged himself and all his posterity. When it pleases God the blessed Spirit to reveal to them in their heart the depth of the fall, depend upon it that they long for every word of the text; they long to have that “uttermost” revealed in the experience of their heart.

Reading: Hebrews 10:1-18

To the reader…

These words speak to you, if you have seen something of the depth into which you have sunk. Are you afraid that your case is too hopeless, that you are too far gone to be saved? Then look at that one word: “uttermost.” It speaks of the hopeless condition of those whom He saves, but also of an arm that can pluck a poor sinner out of the lowest hell.

Do not think that the Lord Jesus came for a little work. He left the bosom of the Father, took our nature upon Him, bled and died, and descended into the depth into which we had sunk. Would such a Saviour fall short for your need? The more deeply you see your fall, the more you will long for this word. Ask Him, then, to reveal it in the experience of your heart; He ever lives to make intercession for those who come unto God by Him.
