De wonderen van Christus

Vandaag

3 min. read

The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in Me.
Matthew 11:5, 6

Whenever spiritual sight is given and the purity and holiness of the Lord are made known to the heart, self-abasement follows; we see that everywhere in the Holy Scripture. “I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth Thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes” (Job 42:5, 6). “Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts” (Isaiah 6:5). The purity, holiness and spirituality of God’s nature made the saints of old bow down before Him in their souls.

The Lord God Almighty reveals these perfections in the soul to lead it away from a broken covenant. He makes known His purity, spirituality and holiness to lay guilt upon the soul, to cut off every lying refuge and to strike every hope out of its hands, except the hope which He Himself implants. I cannot determine – and who can? – in what measure we shall know God’s purity, how deeply our heart will be grieved by a sense of His greatness, and what impressions of inward reverence and what feelings of guilt, fear and condemnation will be raised by His holy law. But one thing I know for certain: if they do not drive us out of every false refuge, if they do not strip us of every natural hope, if they do not take away every creature prop from under our soul, then they have not yet done their work.

And why does God show His awful greatness, why does He let us see our secret sins, why does He lay them heavily and powerfully on our conscience, and why does He search our heart to the very bottom? Why is all this preparation needed, but to bring us near to the Son of His love, and to make Him beloved and precious to our soul?

Reading: Isaiah 6

To the reader…

How small the light of God makes a man! Has it made you small too? Have you seen something of His holiness and then abhorred yourself, like him who said, “Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes”? Are you being driven out of every false refuge, and do you see every natural hope struck out of your hands? That is painful, and it is not wrong that you feel it so.

But ask yourself what all this is for. God does not show us our secret sins in order to crush us and leave us lying there. He searches the heart to the very bottom to bring us near to the Son of His love, and to make Him beloved and precious to our soul. Every prop that gives way points to Him. So in your poverty do not look for a new refuge, but only for that one hope which God Himself plants in the soul.
