Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: His going forth is prepared as the morning; and He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
Hosea 6:3

“To know the LORD” is to know experimentally and spiritually the power of Jesus’ blood and righteousness, and to know our eternal union with Him. It is so to know Him that the secrets of His heart are opened to us, and that by faith we enter into the length and breadth and depth and height of the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge. It is so to know Him that His Spirit animates us and His image is stamped upon our soul by the Holy Ghost. It is to know Him when He comes down from His glorious sanctuary into our heart and fills our soul with His presence and love. It is to know Him as the One Who is in us the hope of glory and makes our body His temple, Who dwells in us, animates us, speaks and lives in us, and moves, as it were, every going forth of our heart and all the faculties of our soul.

To know the Lord is the chief part and the very essence of vital godliness. “To know the LORD” points to the knowledge of the Lord both in the Trinity of His Persons and in the Unity of His Essence. Therefore we may say that to know the Lord the Father in His everlasting love, the Lord the Son in His redeeming blood, and the Lord the Spirit in His divine operations and blessed teachings, is here below the foretaste of bliss. And to know God and see Him as He is, is above the perfection of eternal blessedness.

Reading: John 17:1-17

To the reader…

What does it mean for you, dear reader, to know the LORD? It is more than having right thoughts about Him. It is to feel the power of Jesus’ blood and righteousness in your own conscience; to taste His love, which passeth knowledge; to know Him as the One Who comes down into the heart and fills the soul with His presence. It is to know the Father in His everlasting love, the Son in His redeeming blood, and the Spirit in His blessed teachings.

Perhaps you sigh that you know so little of it as yet. Do not let that sigh weigh you down, but let it drive you onward. What is tasted here below is only a foretaste, and yet it is the very essence of vital godliness. Ask Him, then, to make Himself known to you. He Who begins that knowledge in a poor soul will one day make it perfect, when you shall see Him as He is.
