De gave van Christus

Vandaag

3 min. read

Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: to Whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Galatians 1:3-5

Have you ever seen your sins? Mark the words: how much they say! Have you ever had a sight of your sins? Have they ever pressed as a load of guilt upon your conscience? Have you ever seen their blackness, their enormous magnitude, their aggravated nature, their countless multitude, and how each of them deserved an eternal hell?

Has the wrath of God on account of your sins ever come into your conscience? Has His anger ever taken possession of your spirit? Did His hand ever lie heavy upon you day and night, so that your moisture was turned into the drought of summer? Has the curse of the law ever sounded in your conscience? Did your iniquities ever seem more than the hairs of your head, so that you almost sank down in despair under the dreaded wrath of God?

If the Lord has ever wrought something of this experience with power in your conscience, then you will also see and experience something of what it means that Christ gave Himself for your sins. For those horrible sins of yours, those black and dreadful crimes of yours, which have so grieved your conscience and so troubled your soul, and which have so often made you fear that hell would be your eternal dwelling place.

Now as long as a man knows nothing of the guilt of his vile and horrible sins, and they have not been laid as a heavy weight upon his heart and as a burden upon his conscience, he cannot enter into the solemn wonder that the Son of God offered Himself up for them. He does not know what sin is. Its true nature and its dreadful magnitude have not been laid bare to him; its guilt, filth and bitterness have not been revealed to him by the teaching of the blessed Spirit.

Therefore he knows little or nothing of the solemn wonder of dying love and atoning blood. He cannot fully and clearly justify God in the gift of His Son. Nor can he rightly value the love of Christ, Who entered into such extraordinary circumstances of reproach and suffering that He might bear his sins and put them away by His atoning blood.

Reading: Psalm 22:1-19

To the reader…

Burdened soul, have you seen your sins? Not only as a word you know, but as a load upon your conscience, black and countless, more than the hairs of your head? Does the hand of the Lord lie heavy upon you day and night, so that at times you almost sink down in despair? That is a bitter path, and it would be insincere to make it look better than it is.

But know this too: whoever comes to know his sins in this way also comes to understand something of the solemn wonder that the Son of God gave Himself for them. Those very horrible sins of yours, which have so troubled your soul, He has borne and put away by His atoning blood. So do not let the burden drive you away from Him, but to Him. The more heavily you feel the guilt, the more precious His dying love will become to you.
