Christus’ opstanding

Vandaag

3 min. read

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Colossians 3:1,2

By nature we cleave to the earth and to earthly things. Our affections lie buried in the grave of death, and we cannot of ourselves raise them to high and heavenly things. Therefore we need the power of Christ’s resurrection. Then we experience and feel within that, because we have risen together with our Covenant Head, we no longer lie buried in temporal and sensual things, in the vain and passing things here below. Then we can set our affections on things above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Our Head is risen from the dead. Why, then, should we, members of His body, keep grovelling here below in the dust of the earth?

He has gone on high. Let our affections rise with Him. He is in heaven. Let our heart be with Him. Now, as we feel the power of Christ’s resurrection, we rise in heart and mind above this wretched earth, with all its cares and passing vanities.

Nothing seems a clearer proof of the low, decayed state of the Church in our day than the visible lack of this heavenly grace. How few have their affections set on things above! How few can really say, “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20). How few show by their walk or their life that their heart is in heaven, even if only now and then! How few have tender thoughts of Jesus, or a longing for His manifested presence: “O when wilt Thou come unto me?” (Psalm 101:2). How few delight in Him Who is the chiefest among ten thousand and altogether lovely (Song of Solomon 5:10,16), with a heart that goes out after Him as the hart panteth after the water brooks (Psalm 42:1).

Reading: Colossians 3:1-17

To the reader…

There are days when it is good to ask yourself honestly: where is my heart today? By nature we cleave to the earth, and our affections lie buried in the cares and passing things of here below. We cannot raise them upward in our own strength. How few can honestly say that their conversation is in heaven! Be honest with yourself: do you know those tender thoughts of Jesus, that longing, “O when wilt Thou come unto me?”

If you have little of it, do not run away from Him, but seek the power of His resurrection. Your Head is risen from the dead and has gone on high; He sits at the right hand of God. Why should the members remain lying in the dust? Pray that He may draw your heart to Himself, as the hart panteth after the water brooks. Whoever learns to know Him as altogether lovely will gladly seek those things which are above.
