And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Acts 20:32

The apostle pointed his hearers the way, not to make them rest upon their own strength and wisdom, but to live out of the springing fountain of fulness in the great and glorious risen Mediator. This is the only way to come to know anything of grace. I may hear of grace all my life and yet die in ignorance of it. I may sit under ministers who preach nothing but grace, and yet be as far from it as the devil himself. But when “the word of God’s grace” falls into my heart, when it pleases God the Holy Ghost to send His own precious truth into my soul and by means of that word to communicate something of His superabounding grace, then, and then only, is it mine.

Nor is there any other way of being built up. Doubts and fears cannot build you up. Trials and exercises cannot build you up. Temptations cannot build you up. Heavy losses in natural life and bitter afflictions in spiritual life cannot build you up. They pull you down and lay you low.

They scatter the “wood, hay, stubble” to the wind, and they leave you in a wild, barren desert, in a waste, howling wilderness. But only “the word of God’s grace,” communicated to the soul out of Christ’s inexhaustible and divine fulness, is able to build up. Everything else that is built up is a building without a foundation, a house of cards, a castle in the air, a mist driven by the wind.

Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:9-23

To the reader…

How strangely it can go: you have heard much about grace, and yet you fear that you yourself are a stranger to it. Have the doubts, the losses and the bitter afflictions laid you low, so that you feel yourself in a howling wilderness? Do not think that the Lord has written you off because of it. It is true, such things cannot build you up; they pull you down and scatter all your wood, hay and stubble to the wind.

But just there, where everything of your own falls away, you learn to look to the fountain of fulness that is in the risen Mediator. Do not rest upon your own strength or wisdom, but ask whether it may please God the Holy Ghost to let His own precious truth fall into your heart. Then, and then only, does grace become yours. And what He builds in this way is no castle in the air, but a house upon a firm foundation.
