I create the fruit of the lips.
Isaiah 57:19

It is as necessary that the Lord should create the fruit of the lips to utter it as that He should create the fruit of the heart to feel it. We sometimes, for instance, have spiritual feelings welling up, fermenting and working in our minds, but we cannot utter them. Sometimes they are too deep for expression, “groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26), as the apostle says. Many of God’s children cannot express what they feel. They have a clear experience but a confused utterance; they know what experimental truth and divine teaching are, but can neither defend the one nor explain the other. Therefore the Lord must create not only the spiritual feelings but also the spiritual expressions, that out of the heart, through the mouth, the fruit may come to His praise and glory.

The first feeling which God usually creates in the soul is a sense of its own guilt, ruin and misery. And the first fruit of the lips which He creates, springing out of and corresponding to this spiritual feeling, is confession. “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy” (Proverbs 28:13). “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). But of all things that are humbling, confession is perhaps the most humbling. This is especially so with man.

We often feel that we are in the wrong, but we cannot acknowledge it. That wretched pride and self-justification are often at work in our hearts, so that a man will by no means own his faults to a fellow man, while his conscience is all the time condemning him. And so it is in spiritual things. It is very hard to come with confession before the face of God. Confession must, as it were, be squeezed out of us, pressed out of our hearts by heavy burdens laid upon the conscience. An honest, heaven-taught soul knows that it is of no use to deceive God with a hypocritical confession. It knows, too, that whoever confesses iniquity with the mouth and cherishes it in the bosom only commits yet another sin.

Reading: Isaiah 57

To the reader…

Here is a word for anyone who has something lying on his conscience that he has not yet dared to speak out before God. We often know well enough that we are in the wrong, but our pride and self-justification keep the mouth shut. Or perhaps you can feel it, but not say it: your sighs are too deep for words, and you speak confusedly of what you nevertheless clearly experience. Do not despair about that. The same Lord Who creates the fruit of the heart also creates the fruit of the lips.

Ask Him, then, for an honest confession. Not a hypocritical confession with the mouth while the heart still cherishes the sin, but a confession pressed out of you by the burden on your conscience. He has said, “Whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” And, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just.” So, out of the heart and through the mouth, the fruit comes to His praise and glory.
