Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for Thou art my praise.
Jeremiah 17:14

If it pleases the Lord in any measure to incline His ear to hear our prayer, if it pleases Him to speak His Word sweetly and powerfully to us, to let us see and feel something of our interest in the precious blood of the Lamb and to deliver our soul out of the hand of the enemy—then we can see, feel and know how great is the salvation which the Lord Jesus Christ has accomplished. Then we come to see that nothing but such a salvation as He has wrought, and no other Saviour than the Lord Jesus Christ, can really be suitable to save our soul.

The foundation of all true religion—the foundation of every sigh, every cry, every groan, every wish, every desire and every true breath of prayer—is therefore an experimental knowledge of the disease in all its various forms. It is knowledge, inward knowledge, of the depth of the fall, as it is made manifest in our wretched heart.

When, then, it pleases the Lord to stretch forth His hand and work powerfully for our deliverance, when the Lord blesses our soul and comes to us to reveal His goodness and love, and when we compare what we are and what we have been with the riches of His mercy and grace—how highly does this exalt in our eyes His salvation and sacrifice, and the love, the blood and the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ!

Reading: 1 Peter 1:14-25

To the reader…

Perhaps you are discovering more and more of the disease in your own heart, and it seems as if it only grows darker there. Then know that this experimental knowledge of the depth of the fall is no sign that the Lord has forsaken you. It is rather the foundation of every sigh, every groan and every true breath of prayer. Whoever does not know the malady does not seek a Physician.

And when it pleases the Lord to incline His ear to you, to speak His Word sweetly and powerfully to you, and to let you feel something of the precious blood of the Lamb, then you will see how great His salvation is. The deeper you have learned to know yourself, the higher His love, His blood and His grace are exalted in your eyes. There is no other Saviour, but neither is another needed: He is enough to save your soul.
