And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Acts 20:32

Of this “word of His grace” the apostle says that it “is able to build you up” (Acts 20:32). A foundation had been laid in their hearts. They had been taken off the sandy ground of self. The tower of Babel of their own righteousness had been dashed to pieces, and its stones and slime scattered to the four winds. Christ had been laid by the blessed Spirit as a foundation in their souls. To Him they had come as poor sinners, of Him they had made use, and His Person they had seen with the eye of living faith. They had felt His blood to be especially precious, under His righteousness they had hidden themselves, and something of His dying love had been shed abroad in their hearts.

So they came to stand upon a firm foundation: the Rock of Ages, Jesus Christ! On Him therefore they stood, and “of His fulness have all we received, and grace for grace” (John 1:16). Upon this, then, they were to be built up. And there was only one thing that could so build them up: “the word of God’s grace.” Why? Because in our heart, from beginning to end, there is nothing spiritually good at all, except what “the word of God’s grace” brings into it.

It is by “the word of God’s grace” that we are laid upon the Rock of Ages, Jesus Christ. It is by “the word of God’s grace” that every stone in the spiritual building is set fast. And it is by “the word of God’s grace” that at last the headstone is brought forth, with shoutings, crying, “Grace, grace unto it” (Zech. 4:7).

Reading: Zechariah 4

To the reader…

Poor sinner, has the tower of your own righteousness been dashed to pieces too? Do you stand with empty hands, and do you find nothing in your heart that is spiritually good? Do not despair over that, for this is how the Lord has always dealt with those whom He will set upon the Rock of Ages. First the sandy ground of self is taken away, so that Christ is the only foundation.

And if something of His precious blood and His dying love has come into your soul, the word of God’s grace will go on building too. Every stone is set fast by it, and none of it comes from yourself. Do not seek it, then, in your own strength, but receive out of His fulness grace for grace. He Who began the work will also bring forth the headstone, and one day it will sound from your lips: “Grace, grace unto it!”
