Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what He hath done for my soul.
Psalm 66:16

Is there such a thing as “Christian experience”? Every God-taught soul will at once answer, “Yes, there is, and I hope I have known it.” But is that experience very important? “Yes,” the same God-taught soul will answer, “of infinite importance; for heaven or hell hangs upon the possession or the want of it.” But if that be so, how is it that some deny it and others ridicule it? Two causes chiefly lie at the root of this: ignorance on the one hand, and the enmity of the human heart on the other.

By nature men deny what they do not know. And the human heart is so full of desperate, irreconcilable enmity against God that it will always fight against everything that bears His image. We need not wonder, then, that experience — the work of God upon the soul — in all its various forms is denied by some, and ridiculed and despised by others.

But what a blessing it is not only sometimes to feel something of a true Christian experience in our hearts, but also to find it so clearly and blessedly described in the Word of God! These are two witnesses: the witness within and the witness in the Word of truth. “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” (2 Corinthians 13:1). It is therefore a blessing, an unspeakable blessing to the Church of God, that every feeling which the blessed Spirit raises up in the heart of the living Church can be traced out in God’s Book. And it is a blessing in two ways.

In the first place it is a blessing because, when men set themselves against those truths, we can sometimes point to the Word of God and say, “It stands here — can you deny what God Himself has declared?” And in the second place it is a blessing when we ask ourselves whether our own experience is really genuine and sincere. Then it is found to agree with the Word of God, and so we have the evidence that it has been wrought in our hearts by the same Spirit of God Who has revealed it in the Word of truth.

Reading: Psalm 66

To the reader…

These words are for you if you sometimes wonder whether what has passed in your heart is really genuine and sincere. Have you felt something of guilt, of fear, of hope, of looking to God, and yet do not dare to say that it was His work? Then do not be put off because the world denies or ridicules such experience. By nature men deny what they do not know, and the human heart fights against everything that bears God’s image.

But bring your experience to the Word. There the second witness stands beside the witness within. If you find your sighs, your conflict and your longing again in God’s Book, you have no small blessing: an evidence that the same Spirit Who revealed the Word has also wrought in your heart. Heaven or hell hangs upon this. Seek it, then, in earnest, and, if He gives it you, declare what He has done for your soul.
