Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for Thou art my praise.
Jeremiah 17:14

Can we entertain any hope that God is carrying on the work of grace in our soul? Is there anything that God has done for us, or that He is doing now? Let us look at it and compare it with this portion of God’s Word. Can we find in our heart this prayer: “Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved”? Has the Lord shown us or made us feel something of that alarming malady which is sin? Have we felt what misery we have brought upon ourselves? Have we also seen the salvation that is in the Lord Jesus Christ, and how well it suits the condition of our soul? And do we beg of Him, “Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed”?

Thou needest only to speak the word. It may be very bad with me: my maladies may be very alarming, the evil of my heart very strong, my backslidings innumerable and my soul far from Thee. But, Lord, Thou hast all power; Thou needest only to speak the word! “Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed.” Nothing else is wanting. I cannot wash the Ethiopian white, nor make the leopard lose his spots, but Thou canst do all this.

Heal me, then, with Thy precious truth and grace, and let something of Thy pardoning love and mercy come to me. “Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved.” I want no other remedy than Thy precious blood, applied to my conscience, and no other love than Thy blessed love, shed abroad in my heart.

If these are the exercises, desires and feelings of our soul, they bring us to the throne of grace and separate us from the world. They exercise our spirit unto godliness, take away hypocrisy, deceit, lies and falsehood, and make our heart earnest and sincere before the God of all truth.

Reading: Luke 7:1-10

To the reader…

Are you, reader, looking for a token that God has begun the work of grace in your soul? Then do not look first at what you are or do, but whether this prayer lives in your heart: “Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed.” Have you learned to know the alarming malady of sin, the misery you have brought upon yourself and your countless backslidings? You cannot wash the Ethiopian white, but He can do all this.

He needs only to speak the word. There is no other remedy than His precious blood, applied to the conscience, and no other love than His love, shed abroad in the heart. So bring your malady just as it is to the throne of grace. A soul that learns to cry like this is separated from the world and made sincere before the God of all truth. He is your praise, and He saves those who beg of Him in this way.
