Alle dingen ten goede

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.
Romans 8:28

What does it mean to be born of God? We read of those who were followers of the Lord Jesus Christ that they “were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:13). A heavenly birth is here set over against the birth of the flesh; the one is denied, the other affirmed. To be born of God means to be quickened into spiritual life by the Holy Ghost; to have passed from death unto life; to have received faith, hope and love in our hearts by the operation of God the Holy Ghost; to have become new creatures in Christ; to have received the kingdom of heaven and to experience the power of God in our soul.

Suppose a man is enabled to find that he is born of God; that a great change has taken place in his soul; that he is a new creature in Christ; that old things are passed away and all things are becoming new. Suppose he has the witness of God in his conscience that this Divine change has been wrought in him, and that the love of God has been shed abroad in his heart by the Holy Ghost. Then he has the evidence that he is one who loves God, and with it a right to the promise now before us.

Our second mark of one who loves God is that he knows God. This we cannot do by nature, for a veil of unbelief lies over our heart. We are born in darkness and in the shadow of death. But when it pleases God to shine into our soul and to give us “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Cor. 4:6), when He takes away the veil of unbelief and gives us the knowledge of Himself as the only true God, and of Jesus Christ, Whom He has sent (and this is life eternal), then we know God. Then we know Who He is and fear His great Name.

Reading: 1 John 4:7-21

To the reader…

Sometimes you quietly wonder whether that blessed promise, that all things work together for good, also holds for you. Then do not look first at the strength of your love, but at the work God has done in you. Has a change come into your soul, a new life that you did not have of yourself? Has the veil of unbelief ever been taken away, so that you saw something of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ?

If so, that is no work of flesh and blood, but of the Holy Ghost. By nature we all lie in darkness and in the shadow of death; that you have learned to know God and to fear His great Name is His own gift. Dare to conclude from this that He has not forgotten you. He Who has caused the light to shine in your heart will also make His promise good to you.
