Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
Isaiah 45:22

Is it not a mercy to be weaned, stripped and purged from human righteousness, natural piety and a long list of human duties, not one of which we can perform properly or acceptably? Is it not a mercy to have nothing whatever to do, but simply what the Lord does in us and for us, and to look unto Him in Whom salvation is and from Whom salvation comes?

O what rest and liberty for a poor, guilty wretch, who is busy with all manner of tasks and only increases his guilt by them! What rest to find and feel that all has been done for him and that he has only to receive it; that the feast is prepared and he has only to partake of it; that the atoning blood has been shed and he has only to feel its power; that salvation is accomplished and that all that has to be done is already done! And all this is given abundantly “without money and without price.” It is freely bestowed and brought into the conscience by God’s work, that He may be the First and the Last Who receives all the glory, and that we may receive all the benefits and comfort that He can bestow. What a sweet and blessed way of salvation this is for a poor sinner!

How comprehensive are the words, “It is finished!” Everything needed for the salvation of a sinner has thus already been done for him. The whole work is accomplished and an eternal redemption obtained. The only thing that remains to be done (and the Lord does it, or it would never be done) is that the sinner receives it into his heart and lives under its blessed unction and power.

May this be the joyful experience of our souls. May we, even from “the ends of the earth,” be enabled to look unto Him, and know that He is God, and there is none else. May we then continually come to Him, believe in Him and rest upon Him, as all our salvation and all our desire.

Reading: Luke 14:12-22

To the reader…

Here is a word for the one who is still busy with all manner of tasks, in the hope of at last becoming something before God by them. Do you find that every duty you take upon yourself only makes your guilt greater, because you cannot perform a single one of them properly? Then this word is for you: “Look unto Me, and be ye saved.” You are not asked to bring anything, but to look unto Him in Whom salvation is.

The feast is prepared, the blood is shed, the work is finished. It is given without money and without price. What still has to happen is that you receive it into your heart, and that too the Lord does, or it would never be done. Do you feel as though you were at the ends of the earth, far away and poor? Then cry to Him to turn you towards Himself, that you may rest upon Him as all your salvation and all your desire.
