I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment.
Proverbs 8:20

The Covenant Head of His Church comes forward here as the One Who leads His people: “I lead,” as the Good Shepherd, Who goes before His sheep and leads them step by step. We cannot take a single step without Him. Only so far as it pleases Him to lead us step by step and foot by foot in the way of eternal life shall we have wisdom, strength or power to walk in it.

“I lead in the way of righteousness.” These words apply to His blessed work in the soul. By that work He makes everyone whom it pleases Him to quicken into eternal life “walk in the way of righteousness.” Let us begin where His work in the soul begins. For even at the very first beginning of His work upon the heart it is emphatically true that He leads in the way of righteousness. And how does He at the beginning lead them in the way of righteousness? By opening up the righteousness of God’s holy law, and so leading the soul into the law.

This work in the soul, however, does not in all cases go to the same depth of conviction. It is not always attended with the same terrors. Nor, when this righteous law is applied to the conscience, is the soul always plunged into the same depth of distress and sorrow.

We cannot lay down any fixed measure for this. We may not say that convictions must go so deep or that they must last so long. But this we can say of them: they must go so deep as to humble to the dust, and they must last so long that the work of conviction is thoroughly accomplished. But how deep and how long, that we must leave to the unerring wisdom of God.

Reading: Proverbs 8:1-21

To the reader…

Who does not sometimes measure his own conviction by that of another? Have you heard of souls who were plunged into deep terrors, and do you now fear that the work in you is not real because it went differently with you? I say it honestly: we cannot lay down any fixed measure for this. The work does not go equally deep in everyone and is not always attended with the same distress.

What is needed is this: that it humbles you to the dust, so that you can no longer take a single step without Him. Leave the question of how deep and how long, then, to the unerring wisdom of God. He is the Good Shepherd, Who goes before His sheep and leads them step by step. Those whom He quickens He also leads in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment.
