The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know Thy Name will put their trust in Thee: for Thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee.
Psalm 9:9-10

If we have ever known times when the soul was in trouble (and of that we must judge for ourselves), then we fled for refuge to the Lord. There is no other to whom we can go. We may try every arm but His, we may look every way but the right one, and we may lean on every staff but the true. But sooner or later we come to this: none but the Lord God Almighty can speak peace, pardon and comfort to our hearts. He created heaven and earth, He made our soul and body, He has kept and preserved us to this very moment, He stands by our bed and by our path and ever watches over us, and He sent His beloved Son as a sacrifice for sin.

None but this eternal Creator, Preserver and Redeemer, Who made and upholds heaven and earth, can do it.

But you will have noticed that the text speaks of “times of trouble.” Happily the text does not describe what those times are, how many there are, or how long they last. Nor does it describe what that trouble will be. Whatever trouble befalls a child of God, it is a “time of trouble.” And however long or short it lasts, it is still a “time of trouble.”

In these times of trouble the Lord will be his high tower, his Refuge. How blessed it is that in such times we have a God to Whom we can go! How blessed to feel that there are everlasting arms to lean upon, that there is a gracious ear into which we may pour our complaints, and that in the bosom of the Lord of life and glory there is a heart, a sympathising heart, that feels for us. How blessed to know that there is a hand which brings relief, and sometimes to feel relief from that almighty and gracious hand!

Reading: Psalm 9

To the reader…

How often a soul comes into times of trouble! Perhaps you are in such a time now. Have you, too, tried every arm but His, and leaned on every staff but the true one? Then you know how little they could give you. Do not be ashamed that it went so with you; it is the way many children of God have gone, until they came to this: that none but the Lord can speak peace, pardon and comfort to the heart.

The text does not say how long your trouble will last, but it does say that in such times the Lord is a refuge for the oppressed. There is a gracious ear into which you may pour out your complaints, and a sympathising heart that feels for you. Seek Him, then, even though you see no way out as yet, for He has not forsaken them that seek Him.
