Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
Hebrews 12:1

By grace in the heart a man can face every obstacle that stands against him. He breaks right through them and finds that they cannot keep him from setting out. He lays aside the weights and begins the race that is set before him. Like a runner starting a contest, he is at first all fire, full of strength and energy. His eye is fixed on the crown and his feet are unwearied; and so he runs eagerly on. But after a time he finds that he has not yet laid aside every weight, and as his strength declines, the weights he carries become more and more of a hindrance.

He has not yet wholly given up the world. He may have cast off the world without him, but he does not so easily get rid of the world within him. He has put aside outward sins, which once pressed him down to the earth and were a clog upon his foot, but he finds that he does not so easily lose the sins within. By grace he can indeed cease from committing outward sins, but there is still an evil heart which continually brings forth fresh occasions and enticements to evil.

He finds too that he can lay aside these weights only by grace. All that is not grace is weight; all that does not help, hinders; and all that does not drive forward, holds back. So he discovers that he must cast off many things which at first he did not feel to be weights at all. He must give up many habits, principles and dearly cherished idols, for he now finds that unless he lays them aside, he will be so hampered and hindered by them that he is sure he will never overcome.

He begins to find that it is not only the sins in all their shapes in his heart which, when they come to light and demand gratification, become weights that clog his feet. His own strength, wisdom and righteousness, his own resolutions and promises, his own fleshly piety and creature holiness are also heavy weights which he must lay aside.

Reading: 2 Corinthians 6:11–7:1

To the reader…

Do you recognise it, dear reader? At first all fire, the eye on the crown, the feet unwearied; and then, after a while, the discovery that so much weight has come along with you. The outward sins may have been cast off, but the evil heart goes on bringing forth fresh enticements. And what is hardest of all: your own strength, wisdom and righteousness, your resolutions and promises, turn out to be weights that hinder you rather than help you.

Do not let this discourage you, as if you had gone backwards. It is precisely a fruit of grace that you are learning to see what is weight. Everything that is not grace hinders; that is why you are made poorer and poorer in yourself, so that you may become richer in Him. Lay aside, then, your fleshly piety too, and run no longer on your own promises, but on grace alone. It was grace that made you begin, and grace alone can carry you to the end.
