God is faithful, by Whom ye were called unto the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Corinthians 1:9

When God calls His people by His grace, it is to give them a share in the highest blessings and the highest glory that He can bestow upon men. And that not only for eternity, but also for time: on this side of the grave as well as on the other. Therefore He cries to them by His prophet, “Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness?” (Jeremiah 2:31). When the Lord calls His people away from earthly pleasures, is it only to lead them in paths of affliction and sorrow? Does He mean them to leave the fleshpots of Egypt to die of hunger in a waste howling wilderness?

That was the complaint of the murmurers of old, who accused Moses of having brought them out of Egypt to kill them with thirst. Does He take earthly pleasures from them to let them perish in misery and despair? O no! He calls them even now to the greatest privileges and the highest favour that His eternal love could bestow upon them. That calling is nothing less than “the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord.” So here by grace they may have fellowship with the Son of God, and hereafter share in His glory.

Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:1-17

To the reader…

Weary pilgrim, have you had to let go of earthly pleasures, and does it now seem to you as though the Lord has brought you into a waste howling wilderness? Does your heart sometimes murmur as Israel did, as though He led you out of Egypt to let you die of thirst? Then hear how He Himself asks, “Have I been a wilderness unto Israel?” He does not call His people to let them perish in misery and despair.

God is faithful. To what has He called you? To nothing less than the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord. That is the highest privilege His eternal love could bestow, and that not only on the other side of the grave, but also now, on the way through the wilderness. Do not look, then, only at what you have lost, but to Him into Whose fellowship you have been called. Faithful is He that calleth you, Who also will do it.
