For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
Romans 5:10

We can only be “reconciled” to God when the enmity is taken away. It is in grace as it is in nature. Take two friends who have gone through life together like brothers. An estrangement comes; enmity begins to grow in the heart of one or the other; they are divided and perhaps even become enemies. They may be reconciled to each other, but only truly so when the enmity is taken out of the heart. Every other reconciliation merely patches up the breach; it is hollow and insincere, not real and without depth. First the enmity must be taken away before any real reconciliation can take place.

So it is between man and God. Only when the enmity is taken away can reconciliation take place. Thus it is at once evident how vain and false is the notion that a few righteous works can lift up our naturally fallen state. They cannot take away the enmity. They are like the blood of bulls and goats: they can never take away sin. Like the ashes of the red heifer (Num. 19:2) they may perhaps sanctify to the purifying of the flesh, but in this they do not succeed.

Something more was needed, something which God Himself gave, and that was the death of His own Son: “When we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son” (Rom. 5:10). His beloved Son came in our place; He took our nature; He bore our sins in His own body on the tree; He obeyed the law which we had disobeyed; He fulfilled a righteousness in which we had utterly failed; He bore the curse and endured the penalty. In this way, by death, He reconciled the enemies to God. He obeyed the law that stood in the way, satisfied God’s justice, put away our transgressions and so took away all enmity.

Reading: Acts 4:1-20

To the reader…

Do you know the pain of a broken friendship, where a patched-up peace cannot set you at rest, because you know that the enmity still lives in the heart? So it is between the soul and God. No work of our hands can take that enmity away. Whoever has honestly learned to see this stands with empty hands and no longer knows where to turn.

But it is just there, reader, that the good news begins. When we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son. He came in our place, obeyed the law which we had disobeyed, and fulfilled the righteousness in which we fell short. So He satisfied God’s justice and put away our transgressions. Do not rest, then, in your own efforts, but in His finished work; there alone is real and lasting peace.
