De Doorbreker

Vandaag

3 min. read

The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it: and their King shall pass before them, and the LORD on the head of them.
Micah 2:13

The people spoken of here are God’s people, the remnant chosen by grace, God’s own beloved children. But from the words used we gather that they were in great distress. Why else would they need a Breaker to go before them, if they were not in such difficulties that only an almighty hand could break them down and take them away? We must therefore conclude that the people to whom this promise is made are in such hard circumstances and distress that they will never succeed in making a way through for themselves. That wonderful Person, Immanuel, God with us, must go before them. That is why He is called “the Breaker”: with His almighty hand He breaks in pieces and removes the difficulties in their path, which they could never clear away by their own wise thoughts or strength.

Let us look at this more closely and make plain the smaller parts as well. When it pleases the Lord to quicken a soul that is dead in sin, He sets the strait gate before him. He shows him that his sins deserve eternal wrath and punishment, and He stirs up in his heart a desire to flee from the wrath to come. However different the circumstances of the new birth may be, this main thing will always accompany the work of the Spirit in the heart: fleeing from the wrath to come, a cry in the soul, “What must I do to be saved? God be merciful to me a sinner,” as Bunyan so beautifully describes in his Pilgrim’s Progress.

A quickened soul, like Christian, at once takes to flight. All the difficulties around him are nothing compared with the burden on his back. Wife, child, family, money, all are counted as less than nothing compared with the salvation of his soul. So he begins to run, with his face towards Zion, sincerely longing to be saved at last with an everlasting salvation.

Reading: Micah 2

To the reader…

How often you face difficulties that no wisdom or strength of your own can clear away! It is just then that you belong to the people to whom this promise is made. Why would a Breaker be needed, if there were nothing to break through? Have you felt the burden of sin on your back, and has the cry risen in your soul, “God be merciful to me a sinner”? That is no sign that the Lord has forgotten you, but that He has begun.

Flee, then, as a quickened soul flees, with your face towards Zion. Do not let wife, child, money or anything dear to you weigh more heavily than the salvation of your soul. You will not break open the gate yourself, but He Who is Immanuel, God with us, goes before you and with His almighty hand breaks in pieces whatever blocks your way.
