Shew me Thy ways, O LORD; teach me Thy paths. Lead me in Thy truth.
Psalm 25:4-5

What a confession of ignorance this prayer contains! It really says, “Lord, I cannot see the path; show it me; when I see it, I cannot walk in it; I know that if I trust in my own wisdom, I am a fool. Therefore I would have Thee teach me Thy paths; then I shall see them, know them and walk in them with holy liberty and Divine consolation.”

In the same spirit there follows another petition, “Lead me in Thy truth.” There is not only something very precious in God’s truth, but also something very sublime. It is surely that revelation which is stamped with the highest marks of Divine wisdom. But how comparatively few there are who have any preference for God’s truth, or even the least desire after it! How lightly men deal with lies, errors and delusions in such solemn matters as eternity, and how easily they let themselves be deceived in them and deceive others!

Nay, I believe there is no error or heresy the devil could devise which countless numbers are not ready to believe and would not gladly spread. The human mind, which seems closed against the truth, lies open like a city without walls to the assaults of every error. But when God by His Holy Spirit anoints the eyes of His children with His Divine eyesalve and opens them to see His truth, what light and life attend the unveiling of that truth to the soul!

One of the first marks of grace, one of the first tokens of God’s work upon the soul, is in my judgment a love of the truth: a desire and inclination of the soul towards the pure Word of God. A man may be in darkness as to doctrine, he may sit under learned ministers and be in confusion about his own state and standing. And yet with all this he may cherish a sincere spiritual longing after the truth and be very dissatisfied with errors.

Reading: Proverbs 23:1-23

To the reader…

What a prayer this is: “Lead me in Thy truth”! Can you pray it with the Psalmist? It is a confession of ignorance: Lord, I cannot see the path, and when I see it, I cannot walk in it. Whoever trusts in his own wisdom lies open like a city without walls to every error. How lightly many deal with lies in matters that concern eternity!

Perhaps you are still in darkness as to doctrine, or in confusion about your own state. But is there in your heart a sincere longing after the pure Word of God, a dissatisfaction with error, a love of the truth? That is one of the first marks of God’s work upon the soul. Ask Him then to anoint your eyes with His Divine eyesalve, so that you may see His truth, know it and walk in it with holy liberty.
